Grimm Ales Purple Prose - Review by @Robyn_Seto
Grimm Ales is a Brooklyn, New York based craft brewery founded in 2013 by husband-and-wife team Joe and Lauren Grimm. Much like our friends at Omnipollo, Grimm Ales began as a gypsy brewery. They used other brewers’ facilities to make their beers until 2018 when they opened their own permanent location in Brooklyn. Grimm’s approach to their beers has been consistently elegant and creative, which is astounding when you take their catalog of over 300 beers. Keep in mind that every beer they release has more or less been limited edition, and they don’t seem to have a flagship beer to connect their brand to (such as Huyghe Brewery’s Delirium Tremens).
Today’s beer is Grimm’s Purple Prose, an oak foeder fermented golden sour ale with blackcurrants and raspberries. The aroma upon pour was immediately very oaky, reminiscent of a delicate white wine. This is a tart beer, and the initial sip is a little shocking. However your palate will adjust to the sourness, and you will find a complex yet cohesive blend of the oak foeders intermingling with the tartness of blackcurrants and just barely ripened raspberries. Despite the intensity of the flavor, this is a refreshingly bright beer. I hesitate to call it light, because it does have a subtle body to it and leaves a sticky sweetness on the lips. There’s enough going on with this beer for me to safely say it would be best enjoyed on its own, without food.
I am always intrigued by a Grimm Ales beer whenever I see one on the shelf, even if it isn’t a style I normally go for. You never know what kind of avante-garde collectible beer they’re going to release next. If you see Purple Prose in the wild, I highly recommend grabbing one (or two). Grimm is distributed throughout New York, California, Massachusetts, North Carolina, and SE Pennsylvania.
