Mikkeller SDs Fun with Føder: Review by @Robyn_Seto

Mikkeller SDs Fun with Føder: Review by @Robyn_Seto

Mikkeller is a brewery out of Denmark with a satellite brewery in San Diego, California, known as Mikkeller SD. Today’s beer is from Mikkeller SD: Fun with Føder.

What is a “føder”(or “foeder” which is the typical English spelling)? It is the Dutch word for a large barrel, typically oak. These beers are fermented with wild yeasts in large wooden barrels. The size of the barrel ensures a more consistent fermentation and flavor.

Fun with Føder is a sour ale aged in oak barrels brewed with mango and toasted coconut flakes. The aroma alone tells you this beer has some wild yeast fermentation to it. It’s delightfully funky, but not bitter at all. The mango pairs nicely with the tart characteristics. As it dries, you begin to really pick up the flavors from the foeder. It has a bright and natural woody flavor. I don’t really detect much coconut, although there is a toasty hint at the very end of the sip. This is a refreshing yet cozy beer, and I can imagine enjoying this on a crisp autumn day. Oh! I did.

There’s really nothing for me to complain about here. This is a well rounded foeder ale. I could see it pairing well with light snacks like pretzels. At 5.6% ABV, you could easily enjoy the whole 16 ounce can.

5/5 Burps
