Christmas is just a couple days away and we have officially entered the winter season. It’s only appropriate that I celebrate with a beer just as festive as the holiday: St. Bernardus’ Christmas Ale.

St. Bernardus is a Belgium based brewery specializing in trappist style beers. Trappist beers are produced by trappist monks in monasteries, and as of 2021 only 14 monasteries worldwide currently produce trappist beers as official members of the International Trappist Association (ITA). However, due to an agreement that ended in 1992 with the St. Sixtus monastery, St. Bernardus is technically not a recognized member of the ITA since the beers are not produced within the walls of a monastery. A remnant of the time prior to the expiration of the agreement is the adorable monk that adorns the St. Bernardus labels. 

The monk on the label of St. Bernardus Christmas Ale can be seen donning a Santa hat and rosy-cheeked. The Christmas Ale is lightly brown flavored. Caramelly, spicy, and slightly earthy. The flavors are subtle and the body is on the lighter side of medium. It’s a hefty 9.8% ABV, which makes the 11.2 oz. cans very appealing. You can feel free to enjoy the entire serving without feeling overwhelmed by the booze. There’s not much alcohol on the nose, but halfway through the glass I certainly felt a solid buzz coming on. It’s very warming without being too heavy. 

I would highly suggest this beer for anyone who is a fan of festive booze. The monk on the label will make it appealing to any church-going granny. But maybe warn her of the ABV, and that the monk’s rosy cheeks aren’t from the cold winter wind. I hope wherever you are, you are able to have a delightful and safe celebration. Merry Christmas!
